About Us

Founded in Darjeeling nearly three decades ago, Gorkha Women’s Welfare Forum is a beacon of hope for women and children facing violence, trafficking, and exploitation. What began as a collective response to a tragic case of violence has grown into a movement for safety, dignity, and justice.

We work at the grassroots with survivors of domestic violence, trafficking, and abuse, offering paralegal support, legal aid, counseling, and financial assistance when no one else steps forward. With a team of committed volunteers, we protect identities, uphold rights, and empower women toward independence.

Our Core Areas of Work

  • Women’s Safety & Legal Aid – Paralegal volunteers support survivors through police stations, court visits, and legal processes.

  • Child Protection – Combating trafficking, child marriage, and exploitation through awareness and rescue interventions.

  • Financial Empowerment – Promoting education, vocational training, and income-generation programs.

  • Community Awareness – Campaigns on trafficking, cyber-crime, and domestic violence across villages and tea garden areas.

Why We Exist

Darjeeling shares porous borders with Nepal and Bangladesh, making it a hotspot for human trafficking. Each year, hundreds of girls from tea garden communities are lured away under false promises of education or jobs — many never return. Early marriages, domestic violence, and financial dependency further strip women of agency and dignity.

In response, under the leadership of President Kabita Tamang Pradhan, thousands of women have joined this movement. Today, GWWF stands as a trusted institution in the hills, offering legal, social, and emotional support to those most in need.

Our Vision

A safe, just, and empowered society where women and children live free from violence, exploitation, and discrimination.

First 3 day's Photographic Exhibition in Darjeeling

On Domestic Violence Survivors

Curated through the powerful lens of acclaimed photographer Debalina Majumder, the exhibition showcased the raw realities and indomitable spirit of domestic violence survivors. Each portrait told a story of strength—the courage to acknowledge pain, seek help, and rebuild lives with dignity.

Reaching Beyond Barriers

Relief During the Teesta Floods 2023

During the devastating Teesta floods, when roads were washed away and access to remote villages was nearly impossible, Gorkha Women’s Welfare Forum mobilized quickly to provide relief. Our team and volunteers physically carried essentials—clothes, food, and daily necessities—through difficult terrains, ensuring that aid reached the most affected families. Despite the logistical challenges, we stood by our commitment to stand with communities in times of crisis.

From Darjeeling to Kolkata

Empowering the Differently Abled

We proudly facilitated the participation of seven wheelchair-bound individuals from Darjeeling district in the National Tournament for the Differently Abled, held in Kolkata. This initiative was not only about showcasing their talent but also about instilling confidence and reminding them that there is life, dignity, and hope beyond disability. By creating opportunities for inclusion, we aim to break barriers and build a society where every individual is empowered to dream and achieve.
